What is Cardano?

Cardano (ADA) is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform that supports smart contracts, decentralized applications (dApps), and peer-to-peer transactions. Founded in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood, Cardano runs on Ouroboros, a peer-reviewed proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, and uses Plutus, a Haskell-based smart contract language, for on-chain logic. ADA, Cardano's native token, secures the network through staking and is used for transaction fees and on-chain governance voting.

ADA has a maximum supply of 45 billion tokens; as of late June 2026, approximately 36.4 billion ADA were in circulation, according to CoinMarketCap. Cardano's development is led by three organizations: Input Output Global (IOG) handles protocol engineering, the Cardano Foundation oversees community outreach and standards, and EMURGO drives commercial adoption. Independent developers also build dApps on the network, expanding its DeFi and NFT ecosystem.
