Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source computing platform that enables the creation of smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). More poetically described as "the world computer," it was first conceptualized in a 2013 white paper by Vitalik Buterin. The move also led to the creation of EthereumPoW (ETHW), a fork of the mainnet that opted to retain the original Proof-of-Work consensus for a segment of the community.
