What is Tether (USDT)?

Tether (USDT) is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin that aims to maintain a constant value of $1 per token, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Rather than being backed only by cash, Tether's reserves consist mainly of US Treasury bills and cash equivalents, along with smaller allocations of corporate bonds, secured loans, precious metals, and Bitcoin. USDT launched in July 2014 as Realcoin and was renamed Tether that November. It was originally issued on the Bitcoin blockchain via the Omni Layer Protocol; today USDT runs on more than a dozen blockchains, with Ethereum (ERC-20) and Tron (TRC-20) together accounting for most of its circulating supply, alongside Solana, Avalanche, and other networks. Tether has discontinued support on some earlier chains, including EOS, Algorand, and the original Omni Layer.
