What is Tether (USDT)?

Tether (USDT) is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin that aims to maintain a constant value of $1 per token, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Rather than being backed only by cash, Tether's reserves consist mainly of US Treasury bills and cash equivalents, along with smaller allocations of corporate bonds, secured loans, precious metals, and Bitcoin. Tether Limited, the issuer, publishes quarterly reserve attestations from third-party auditors and updates circulating supply data daily.

USDT launched in July 2014 as Realcoin and was renamed Tether that November. It was originally issued on the Bitcoin blockchain via the Omni Layer Protocol; today USDT runs on more than a dozen blockchains, with Ethereum (ERC-20) and Tron (TRC-20) together accounting for most of its circulating supply, alongside Solana, Avalanche, and other networks. Tether has discontinued support on some earlier chains, including EOS, Algorand, and the original Omni Layer.

As of late June 2026, USDT had a circulating supply of roughly 184 billion tokens and a market cap of about $184 billion, ranking #3 among all cryptocurrencies, according to CoinMarketCap. Traders use USDT to move in and out of crypto positions without converting to fiat, and it is widely used for cross-border payments and as a dollar proxy in countries with limited access to US dollars. As of July 2026, USDT lost formal authorization to operate on regulated exchanges in the European Union under the EU's MiCA framework, though it remains dominant in other markets.
