Tether (USDT) is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin that aims to maintain a constant value of $1 per token, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Rather than being backed only by cash, Tether's reserves consist mainly of US Treasury bills and cash equivalents, along with smaller allocations of corporate bonds, secured loans, precious metals, and Bitcoin. Tether Limited, the issuer, publishes quarterly reserve attestations from third-party auditors and updates circulating supply data daily.
USDT launched in July 2014 as Realcoin and was renamed Tether that November. It was originally issued on the Bitcoin blockchain via the Omni Layer Protocol; today USDT runs on more than a dozen blockchains, with Ethereum (ERC-20) and Tron (TRC-20) together accounting for most of its circulating supply, alongside Solana, Avalanche, and other networks. Tether has discontinued support on some earlier chains, including EOS, Algorand, and the original Omni Layer.
As of late June 2026, USDT had a circulating supply of roughly 184 billion tokens and a market cap of about $184 billion, ranking #3 among all cryptocurrencies, according to CoinMarketCap. Traders use USDT to move in and out of crypto positions without converting to fiat, and it is widely used for cross-border payments and as a dollar proxy in countries with limited access to US dollars. As of July 2026, USDT lost formal authorization to operate on regulated exchanges in the European Union under the EU's MiCA framework, though it remains dominant in other markets.
The USDT/AUD exchange rate is driven by supply and demand across global cryptocurrency markets. Key factors include trading volume, market liquidity, macroeconomic events, regulatory news, and overall investor sentiment. Since crypto markets operate 24/7, the USDT to AUD rate can shift at any moment based on real-time market activity.
On ChangeHero, the USDT to AUD price is updated in real time. We continuously aggregate data from leading exchanges and liquidity providers to ensure you always see the most accurate and up-to-date Tether USD rate.
Cryptocurrency markets never close — they operate around the clock, 365 days a year. The USDT price reacts instantly to global trading activity, news events, whale transactions, and shifts in market sentiment. This constant activity means the Tether USD price can fluctuate within seconds.
The market price of USDT is a reference value based on aggregated data from multiple exchanges. The exchange rate is the actual price at which you can buy or sell Tether USD in a specific transaction — it may include network fees and a small service margin. On ChangeHero, we minimize this difference by sourcing rates from multiple providers to offer you the most competitive USDT/AUD rate.
ChangeHero automatically compares USDT to AUD rates across multiple trusted liquidity providers and exchanges in real time. Our system selects the best available rate for your transaction, so you always get the most value when exchanging Tether USD — with no extra effort on your part.
Each exchange has its own order book, liquidity pool, and user base, which leads to slight price variations for Tether USD. Differences in trading volume, geographic demand, and withdrawal fees all contribute to these discrepancies. ChangeHero solves this by aggregating rates from multiple providers, ensuring you get the best USDT/AUD rate without having to compare exchanges yourself.
